Video Review: Shan -'Stay'

There's a bit of a mystery about the correct genre to put London based singer- songwriter Shan in. Is his music Alternative Folk? Modern Soul? Post Rock? Quite frankly, we don't know -and we kinda like the unpredictability and the fact that we struggle to mould him. Stylistically, Shan seems to be covering a lot of genres and is clearly influenced by many different things. His current single 'Stay' is a chilled out, funky, soulful track where Shan's vocals sound deepend and slightly muffled by auto-tune - reminiscent of atmospheric post rock. The accompanying video to the track (directed by Liam Southall) is simple, efficient, and set in greyscale, simply documenting Shan as he leaves the house wanders streets, passes lakes, goes through tunnels and then starts to fade out with a duplicate shadow of himself running in a different direction to his bodied form. The video ends with a shot of closing doors and a lift going upwards which could possibly serve as an antithesis to the fact that by the end of the song - Shan still has no closure from whoever he's asking to stay in his lyrics. Deep!
