Single Review: Jagga - 'Out of Control'

East London based singer and producer Jagga started the year by parting ways with major label Sony and "the carefully crafted vocal melodies and standard musical structures" expected of him on the label, in favour of exploring a rawer and more creative approach to writing and the delivery of his vocals and his sound.

Fortunately, this change of direction and experimentation has paid of and this can be seen in his new single 'Out Of Control'.  Combining a cinematic, orchestral sound with an essence of melodrama, the song is loosely arranged to allow each section to breathe, grow and desperately climax in its own time. We're fans, are you?

Video: Laura Welsh - Cold Front

Laura Welsh || Website || Tumblr
Buy 'Cold Front EP' || iTunes

'Cold Front' is the follow up single to Laura Welsh's' Dev Hynes produced track 'Unravel' released earlier this year through Luv Luv Luv. This follow up single, (Released on July 15th through Polydor/ Outsider) is a seductive, soulful electronic/ pop track that has an authentic, urban feel to it.

The video is just as mesmerising as Laura's vocals, largely down to director Daniel Cloud Campos and Tamara Levinson-Campos, whose combined creative visionary have produced a sultry video that puts the perfect visuals besides Laura's cinematic and visceral approach to pop music. Very impressive!

Here's the video below:

Video: Sundara Karma - 'Freshbloom'

Sundara Karma || Facebook

With a self-proclaimed sound "more refreshing than sunshine", Reading based four piece Sundara Karma are a promising young act certainly making a name for themselves on the unsigned British indie scene off the back of their luminous, tropic-infused, debut single 'Freshbloom'.

The track comes with a video directed & edited by Daniel Rands and animated by Tashi Reeve featuring the band looking super cool in front of summer storms/ beach backgrounds. The video also features a lot of fruit, be it real or animated outlines, so its also a healthy reminder to not forget your five a day. So whack out the watermelon  and the Hawaiian attire and savour the last bites of summer along with this song!

Video: Editors - 'Formaldehyde' & November Tour Dates

Editors || Website || Facebook || Twitter
Pre-order 'Formaldehyde' || iTunes

On the 2nd of September Editors will release the second single, 'Formaldehyde' taken from their fourth album 'The Weight of Your Love' via Play It Again Sam.

The track comes with a video that signifies the debut project of acclaimed film director Ben Wheatley ( 'Kill List', 'Sightseers' and channel 4 funded 'A Field In England') within the music video industry. Predominately set in slow motion, the video begins with a morbid curiosity as a cowboy drags a coffin through an abandoned western setting. It then becomes progressively more peculiar with the appearance of menacing men in unsettling masks, a coffin break out, the arrival of a bewitching woman who, surrounded by red and black fog seemingly wards of the odd masked men before settling back into the coffin. Emotively explosive,  the video is a great back drop to a powerful song.

Strummerville and King’s Cross celebrate an intimate event for Joe Strummer's Birthday

Gone, but not forgotten, Kings Cross and Strummerville had a little shindig this week (Wednesday 21st August) in celebration of co-founder and lead singer of The Clash, Joe Strummer's, would be 61st Birthday. The evening entailed a drinks reception and live ukulele performance on Kings Cross Viewing Platform overlooking Granary Square from Paul Redfern of punk rock tribute ukulele band The pUKES. Here he is, doing his thing!

Kings Cross holds poignant memories for Joe Strummer for the following reasons: he was a former member of the famed art school today known as Central Saint Martins that is situated in Kings Cross itself,; during his time with The Clash they made their mark on the city by helping to create the revolutionary new genre of music defined in the UK: ‘punk’. Joe also worked very closely with Kings Cross band The Pogues, producing their records and even briefly acting as their lead singer. His legacy continues to influence the music and pop culture of today inspiring generations. As a tribute, ClashBar in Kings Cross was created proving the mark he made in British history. Legacy well left we say!

Fenech-Soler - 'Magnetic' (Jakob Liedholm remix)

 Fenech-Soler || Website
Jakob Liedholm || Website

For us, Fenech-Soler's music always comes under the category 'if it's not broken. don't fix it' where we like every little slice of  superb electro-pop just the way it is!
So, we were prematurely apprehensive when we were introduced to this remix  of 'Magnetic', courtesy of  17 year old, Swedish, progressive house, whizz kid producer Jakob Liedholm.

 Turns out, there was no need to panic, it's pretty sensational, and Fenech-Soler were very wise entrusting this remix into the very capable hands of Jakob Liedholm who has entirely done the track justice by intensifying the sense of anthemic euphoria and managing to place his own mark on the song, without drowning out the vocals or distracting too far away from the fundamental roots of the song.

Give it a listen below.

Back in May Gavin James recorded a really chilled out, acoustic cover of Daft Punk's - 'Get Lucky' for Secret TV where his vocal performance is just as suave as Pharrell in its own right and Gavin's hitting all those high notes spot on!

Give it a listen if you've not already come across it and let us know what you think! We sure feel like we got lucky hearing it. Also, click here for UK support tour and debut EP news from Gavin.

Artist to Check Out: Daniel James & 'A Lonely Man' Music Video.

Daniel James is s a 23 year old singer from Northern Ireland. Having been based in London cultivating his musical career for the past 2 years, 2013 has already seen Daniel release two songs entitled 'Jackdaw' and 'The Stone And The Hollow' whose piano laden melodies, emotional, invasive vocals and profound lyricism have already caused quite a stir earning him comparisons between the likes of Kodaline and Tom Odell.

Returning with his new track, 'A Lonely Man' Daniel explains what it's all about:
"'A Lonely Man' is based on parallel stories. One part expresses my own struggles with everyday life and another part expresses my imagination of what 'struggling' actually entails. Researching old reference books and documentaries, I focussed on the struggle of the slaves in chain gangs in America in the nineteenth century. I tried to harness old slave/gospel type vocal rhythms in the track to reflect the parallel story. 'A Lonely Man' is a story of one man's battle, both real and imagined.'"

Incredibly catchy, contemplative and captivating the song comes with a video directed by Elena Bechthold and Hans Hertel and follows the solitary wanderings of actor Josia Krug that fits perfectly with the meaning of the song. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open because Daniel James is definitely a name we think you'll be hearing a whole lot more of in the near future.

Band To Check Out: Four Phonica

Berlin based electronic/alternative rock four-piece, Four Phonica are Mark Gritsenko (vox, guitars), Daria Chepel (vox, synths), Alexander Petrovsky (bass, synths) and Valery Derevyansky (drums)  who are making energetic emotional rock music which trickles through a cold electronic sound.

Being made up of two former Ukrainian acts, Sexinspace and Marakesh, Four Phonica have a wide following in their homeland of Ukraine but by coming together to form Four Phonica, they've stepped out of their comfort zone to begin the next chapter of their story in Berlin

Currently working on their debut EP that will be released in the Autumn of 2013, check out their bewitching single 'Divine' (available for free download below) which  also comes with an alluring music video directed by Fashion Art Director/Producer and Stylist, Mody Al Khufash. There is a seductive yet statuesque beauty to the video that's intensified by the exceptional penetrating vocals of Mark and Daria and the explosive yet dribbling, dark reverb/ synth washed sound that reminds me a little bit of Chris Corner's solo electro-pop act IAMX.  'Divine' is a very good indication that the EP will be worth the wait.

Band To Check Out: Everywhere

Everywhere || Website

Meet Everywhere, a five-piece alternative rock collective hailing from Stockholm, Sweden. What's their aim? To redefine the perception of the typical indie band with their 'post-pop' sound.
Their first single 'Eddie' blends soft piano, rowdy drums, pop hooks and hard guitar and is a love story that front man, lead vocalist and songwriter Max Berga explains was written "about an ex-girlfriend of [his] that got sucked into the world of fashion as a model where she got used and abused. From what was a personal account, now seems a much bigger story that needs to be shared".
Recorded in LA with producer Mark Needham (Imagine Dragons, The Killers), 'Eddie' is a great insight into what can be expected from their debut EP due out later this year. We can't wait to hear more from them!

Absolutely invigorating, enjoy!

 Montreal four-piece, Elephant Stone recently premiered their new video for catchy, melodic, psych-pop track  'Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin' taken from their second full length self-titled album.
Featuring colourful kaleidoscope, hallucinogenic projections which absorb the band whilst they're doing what they do best spreading their 'psychedilified hindie-rock mantra." Enjoy!

Video: The High Wire - 'LNOE'

http://www.thehighwire.net/

London-based three-piece The High Wire consists of Tim Crompton, Ross Forrest, and Alexia Hagen. On June 11th they premiered their awesome new track 'LNOE' through Pigeons and Planes ahead of it's official single release date of 29th July 2013.
To coincide with the single release, the track now comes with an official video. Directed by Mat Whitecross (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, The Road To Guantanamo, Spike Island) the video stars the fabulous Ray Winstone and is set against the backdrop of Whitecross' striking film noir Ashes (2013).

The video centres on Ray Winstone's character Frank, who is suffering from Alzheimers and coping with surroundings which are constantly changing and blurred.
The video highlights Frank struggling with unsteady and confusing memories/visions of his wife (played by Lesley Manville) and in turn we are unsure of what's more emotionally startling; the intensity of the track itself or the storyline and wonderful visuals of the video - making them a perfect match.

Video: Josh Record covers Lana Del Rey - 'Summertime Sadness'

The enigma that is Josh Record strikes again with another unique cover. This time it's Lana Del Rey - 'Summertime Sadness'. Recorded by Josh in his studio, the cover is big on synth and electronic production, once again showing Josh Record's experimental approach to music, where he is seemingly boundary free and unafraid to mix it up a bit. Just what we like to see. Catch the video below.

Video: Dear Joy - 'Cartoon Song'

Dear Joy is the bright and breezy music project created by the beautiful Thai/Scandinavian singer/songwriter Lou Vilstrup.  Fusing various styles, including acoustic folk/acoustic pop/ and alternative jazz, Dear Joy have created a wonderfully charming five-track EP.

One of the tracks from the EP 'Cartoon Song' comes with a lovely home made video that begins in black and white where Lou Vilstrup makes her way off of the tube and through the London Underground, blows up a balloon, floats up the stairs of the Underground and then her world turns into colour where she spread the joy and happiness around the streets of London! She changes a road crossing message from "Look Right" to "Look Happy" then goes around the streets changing suited business types into fun, carefree, kooks!

Watch out for: A man who accidentally ends up in a dress. Wellington boots walking around a park on their own. The silliest, happiest dance routines. And a little lego man falling into a tin of alphabet spaghetti in particular.

We've never fallen in love with a music video before, until now. So thank you to Lou Vilstrup and all involved for the originality, the creativity and the complete disregard for conformity. We have the hugest smile on our faces and hope the joy is contagious for you guys too!

Video: Riva Starr Feat Rssll - 'Kill Me'

London producer and DJ, Riva Starr, released his second album 'Hand In Hand' last month (1st July) via Snatch! Records , and we're really digging the video that accompanies his track 'Kill Me' taken from the aforementioned album. 'Kill Me' features Rssll on vocals (of indie band The Research) has a chilled- out fun and catchy sound that takes on a bit of a 90's Fat Boy Slim vibe from time to time.

The video, which is a video tribute to Daniel Askill's masterpiece We Have Decided Not To Die is  wonderfully captivating, quirky, transcendent and pulsates along to the tune. Progressing from his house and club roots into an alternative pop sound seems to be working very well for Riva Starr and the video is definitely one of the most enjoyable we've come across in a while. Well played!

Video: Octopuses - 'Sarcastic'

https://www.facebook.com/octopusesband

Here's some infectious indie-pop in the form of 'Sarcastic' the debut single from brand new Brighton five-piece, Octopuses!

They've just posted the video to accompany the track, which is very light-hearted showing the band  looking forlorn, miserable, without hope and their thoughts/ conversations being expressed via big, yellow, cardboard speech bubbles held by men in green morph suits. Directed by Laurence Green, who in this instance is masquerading as some sort of  Muppet's cast off, the blase humour and silliness of it fits perfectly with the deadpan vocals of the lead singer , chunky rhythm, monotonous keyboard and feel good guitar riffs that pleases us to know these guys are very tongue in cheek and aren't taking themselves too seriously for now, instead  just having fun with it all.

Video Review: Helene Greenwood - 'In The Sunshine'

Helene Geenwood || Website || Facebook || Twitter

On 23rd September, charming, London based singer-songwriter Helene Greenwood releases ‘In The Sunshine’ – the first single taken from her upcoming debut album, ‘Collectable You.’

With likenings to  the wonderful Regina Spektor, my original thought was that Helene's music sounds a little like a maturer  and richer version of Gregory and The Hawk.
Newbies, what can you expect from her sound? Well, "The style of my songs reflects an unsettled climate, defying easy categorisation with influences from pop, folk, jazz and contemporary sounds." and let me tell you, it's beautiful!

Written in one day, Helene says  'In The Sunshine' is about "the nature of time. How it can pass gradually as if on a Summer's day and then seem faster as people's lives pass by. I love the contradiction in this."
The accompanying video produced by Helene & North London artist Rebecca Lennon is reflective of this. Shot on Hampstead Heath on a hot lazy day the video has a vibrant, retro, lazy simplicity to it that compliments the song's dreamy aspects.

Representing an intriguing voyeurism  Helene says, "We used lots of old family Polaroid shots to create a strange, dislocated world... We wanted it to feel like you're looking into all these people's lives." The artistic elements to this video are a perfect yet slightly strange fit to a brilliant song.

 It's  refreshing to see a talented artist who can make a video work without over complicating it, trying too hard, or going off on a completely irrelevant tangent and we like the sensory stimulating, thought evoking video, very very much.

Video: The 1975 - 'Sex'

As the date is ever approaching for The 1975's highly anticipated, self-titled, debut album to drop, the band have now released the video for their new single 'Sex' accompanied with a really cool statement explaining the vid:

"The main idea behind the new video for “Sex” was centered around us wanting to incorporate a narrative that acted out the lyrical content of the song. It felt important for the narrative to be the true story of lyrics. So many of our tracks are based on real experiences, it was integral to have an honest portrayal of this. The make up of our music is centered around the juxtaposition of very honest often self deprecating personal stories set against uplifting major chord progressions. It is this dualism and notion of “sound tracking” our own lives which makes us cite John Hughes as such an important influence. Our love of cinematic music really drives us creatively and we wanted this represented in the video, we wanted to make a trailer to the movie of the song if you like.”
“We really love the dualism in the video between the muted almost black and white performance shots of the band set against the cinematic colour of the narrative. We have used black and white for every other video to date so it seemed like incorporating colour would be a massive step for us to make, in reality the creative decision made itself as we liked the obvious separation that the colour provided for the narrative against the performance parts of the video. Our album and EP’s are totally separate entities, each EP is like a polaroid of a specific time and place, in regards to the visuals of the album, we want to make short films for our videos - like trailers almost, in the same way our songs are the narrative to our formative years the videos are the narrative to those songs. As a video “Sex” feels very un compromised, un predictable and from a artistic viewpoint very honest. That is always our main goal as a band. We are very proud of it. We found a true collaborative spirit with Adam Powell the director it was our desire to work with him and his passion and understanding towards our vision that led us to shooting in LA."

'Sex' is set for a August 26th release, a week before the album's out! Pre-order the album on iTunes here

Video: Falling Off Maps - 'Honest'

'Honest' is the haunting debut single from Nottingham's Falling Off Maps; an alternative/rock five-piece consisting of Dave Wright (vocals / guitar), Dane Prewett (bass / electronics), Joe Watts (guitar), Tom Harrison (piano) and Jay Wright (drums).Their sound has been aptly described as "somewhere between Radiohead, Bon Iver, Wild Beasts and early Elbow" which means that their debut album 'A Seaside Town In Winter' due for release later this year is one we are highly anticipating.

Due for release on 12th August through Square Peg Round Hole Recordings, 'Honest' is backed by an equally arousing video which you can see below, filmed, wirtten and directed by band members Dane Prewett, and David Wright. This video is the first of three to be released by the band and ties into one storyline which plays out through the videos in reverse. This is more easily explained by Dane when he says:

“Each video can be viewed with its own storyline but the idea for each one to be open ended and evocative appealed to us massively. It gives the viewer a chance to get involved more than if it was just a straight music promo, to be able to draw their own conclusions from what they see"
"Our love of cinema and storytelling and the freedom of taking the music into other mediums is integral to what we do as band. It is evident lyrically through the album, lots of snapshots of lives and stories that have very strong imagery. It just felt right to continue with that through the videos."
With that being said, we like Falling Off Maps style, we like their focus and we love their sound; so give them a listen, we're sure you will too.
