Artist To Check Out: Blooms.

Blooms is the project of Louise Cunnane, an Irish artist currently based in London, who has teamed up with Darragh Nolan of Sacred Animals on production to permeate the music scene with a powerful and chilling electronic r&b sound. Blooms striking debut single 'Skin' was released late last October, evoking goose bums in a similar shivering fashion as the mid-autumn winds it dropped amongst with a combination of sparse, unnerving synths and Louise Cunnane's haunting, yearning vocals. Lighter and airier than it's predecesor, 'If I' soon followed with the same unnerving, cold, trickling, electronics that both squak and soar like urgent searching seagulls and crash and dissipate in tidal waves of sound. Cunnane's sultry vocals linger in sighs of longing and loneliness, calling out into the unknown.

Current single 'Lust' is the opening track taken from the upcoming 'If' EP . The track combines disorderly, muddled synths in the sense of minimalistic krautrock and then couples with understated r&b. It's slow moving rhythms slightly dulls the senses and makes you itch for a climax which then teases you into thinking it is coming but cleverly never actually never actually culminates in the way you would expect. Probably in a similar way to relationships built from lust.

On 'Lust' Cunnne says: "Lust is the opening track of "If" because Lust consumes you, Lust takes over your mind before your heart has a chance to catch up. It's a hard feeling to ignore and can catapult you into something you're not ready for. The rest of the EP is about dealing with giving into those feelings and what happens when they turn to love and to heartbreak."

We surrender to the power of Blooms. How about you?

Video: Talos - 'Tethered Bones'.

Talos is the project of Cork-born artist Eoin French whose electronic/ r&b infused debut single, 'Tethered Bones'  is punctuated with gloopy, clonky percussion, warning beeps and high pitched, textured vocals that strangely wound on an intensely emotional level. Speaking on ‘Tethered Bones’, Talos states:

“It's a love song, about how a relationship can engulf and transform you: what it can and does take away. What you lose and what you gain."

The track is accompanied by a powerful music video, shot and directed by production company Feel Good Lost which shows themes of hunting and captivity and alternates between murky, earthy saturated shots and black and white visuals of a young woman living out a lonely nightmare, with a seemingly unstable man; a man of whom she is not sure whether she should be comforting or killing.

.Brendan Canty of Feel Good Lost has said of the video:

“From the start, Talos and ourselves had a strong idea about a music-meets-cinema collaboration. I loved the challenge of taking what Eoin wrote and re-interpreting it - the lyrics I latched onto were around this idea of someone being so isolated and alone but at the same time being so smothered and attached to someone. It reminded me of stories I had read about Stockholm syndrome - the unusual relationships and bonds victims develop with their kidnappers.”

Give it a watch:

Video: Four Phonica - Sabotage + free track download

Have you heard 'Sabotage', the noise driven. new single from Berlin-based, Ukrainian electronic/alternative rock four-piece Four Phonica? 'Sabotage' is an energetic, rebellious, self-revolutionary song about inner freedom, expressing the inspirational message from the bands point of view to "live your life and ignore the labels that society will always try to tag you with. Be happy now, life is short.”

The track is available for free download via the band's Soundcloud page and comes with a music video shot at an illegal location in Ukraine by Ells Wake. Set on a car bridge with frozen construction works, the video is lively, unconstrained, empowering and has a scuzzy 90s grunge feel to it that matches the music perfectly. Four Phonica are a truly spirited example that defiant, experimental alt rock still lives on, so be sure to look out for the release of their self-titled EP on 28th February.

Video: Ryan Vail - 'Free' ( Directed By Giles Labarbe)

                                        RyanVail

Ryan Vail (Ryan Vail and Katie Cosgrove) are a Dark Melodic Electronica Duo from Derry whose single 'Free' was released on November 8th via Champion Sound Recordings. Combining experimentation and classical musicianship, Ryan Vail are a formidable duo creating ambient electronic at it's most enthralling, so much so that we are championing them as ones to watch for 2014.

Below we have the accompanying video to the track, which was shot by Belgian director Giles Labarbe, and  tells  a tale of loneliness and introspection. Enjoy!

Free Download: Sundays - 'Forces'

Vancouver based, experimental soul/electronic, singer-songwriter and producer Sundays is a new and exciting, enigmatic artist whose current single 'Forces' has got us very interested to see what wonderful things the future may hold for her.

The second single to be taken from her upcoming EP 'Of Eros and I' (due for release in October)  'Forces' is a down-tempo, minimalistic track with spooky synths, seductive vocals, smooth, spacious hip-hop beats, and lazy tribal percussion. The track  kisses and caresses like a slow, teasing, lover. We are absolutely enthralled by this single, and can't wait to get down and dirty with the EP.

Single Review: TIDEUP - 'A Dance In The Dark'

A couple of months ago I reviewed 'In Curses You Came' the debut EP from experimental pop band TIDEUP and I remember my parting remark about the EP was that its slow dreaminess made it more of a quiet night by the fire listen than one you could throw into the party mix.

Well, 'A Dance In The Dark'  the first single from their up coming album changes that. Whilst Noelle Indovino's wonderfully dreamy vocal style continues to shine, the tempo of the track is much more upbeat. If this is a sign of the quality of the upcoming album I can't wait to hear it.

Band To Check Out: Four Phonica

Berlin based electronic/alternative rock four-piece, Four Phonica are Mark Gritsenko (vox, guitars), Daria Chepel (vox, synths), Alexander Petrovsky (bass, synths) and Valery Derevyansky (drums)  who are making energetic emotional rock music which trickles through a cold electronic sound.

Being made up of two former Ukrainian acts, Sexinspace and Marakesh, Four Phonica have a wide following in their homeland of Ukraine but by coming together to form Four Phonica, they've stepped out of their comfort zone to begin the next chapter of their story in Berlin

Currently working on their debut EP that will be released in the Autumn of 2013, check out their bewitching single 'Divine' (available for free download below) which  also comes with an alluring music video directed by Fashion Art Director/Producer and Stylist, Mody Al Khufash. There is a seductive yet statuesque beauty to the video that's intensified by the exceptional penetrating vocals of Mark and Daria and the explosive yet dribbling, dark reverb/ synth washed sound that reminds me a little bit of Chris Corner's solo electro-pop act IAMX.  'Divine' is a very good indication that the EP will be worth the wait.

Freedom Fry are an LA based duo comprising of Parisian born Marie Seyrat and Michigan native Bruce Driscoll who conjure up subtle electronic baroque-pop vibes with crystal clear vocals and compare themselves to the likes of The High Llamas, Tahiti 80, The Divine Comedy etc.

The 'Friends and Enemies EP' is the fifth recorded release by the duo and is a catchy trilogy of electronic pop which will fit very nicely into your party mix or on the car stereo for a quick trip to the shops and back.
