Video: Tilapia - 'Crayon Brain'.

Alternative pop four-piece Tilapia (Ed Allen, Elliott Brown, Adam Dolby and George Wheeler) currently reside in South London and turned to rocking out (presumably with protective sheets up) in their own living room amongst (and then later on; splattered in) a selection of  primary school arts and crafts and party food favourites in their chaotic new video for current single, 'Crayon Brain'. By the end of the video they all look like demented participants in a very messy mad hatter/school disco/tea party /thing and you can't help but laugh!

Conceptually, 'Crayon Brain' deals with early memories of childhood anxiety surrounding your imagination and is the follow-on track  from 'Insteelworks'. 'Crayon Brain' is the second single to be taken from Tilapia's new 5-track EP 'School' which is out now through Disorder Recordings and can be downloaded via iTunes here.

Video: Falling Off Maps - 'All My Fears'

Check out the video for  'All My Fears', the third and final instalment of the storyline Falling Off Maps have been sharing in their innovative, reverse chronology video trilogy. 'All My Fears' follows on from 'Honest' and 'The Redeemer' providing a dramatic conclusion to a tale of betrayal, friendship, money and power.

Of the three videos, singer Dave Wright says:

"Overall, it was quite an undertaking, and something very challenging for us... t's great to have that last piece of the puzzle out there. The idea was for each piece to stand alone, as well as contributing to the overall story. This final part jumps backwards and forwards in time, before and after the events of 'Honest'. We are looking forward to people watching all three and piecing it together for themselves".

Falling Off Maps have a coarse, organic, likeable sound whose frailty doesn't mean they will be easily quashed amongst other artists; instead it serves as a sharpness that should cut them a nice clean path through to an ever strengthening fan base.

Single Review: Bambi - 'Reap From The Dying Love'

It comes as quite a surprise to hear that London / Essex alternative indie four-piece Bambi have been together for less than a year. James Gonsalves - (Vocals/Guitar), Steve D'Arcy - (Guitar/Vocals) Tyrone Foster - (Guitar/Vocals Miles Shawyer - (Bass) and Jordan Hockley -(Drums) have certainly wasted no time garnering attention in every way they possibly could with their polished, dominating, sublime, stop-and-take-notice sound.

Bambi's latest offering 'Reap From The Dying Love' -  was released on 17th November via Right Track Records/Universal and is a wonderfully captivating indie track that splices underlying 70's psychedelic rock, 80's post punk and the modernity of melodic, electronic indie to produce an ear tingling, spine shivering song that is guaranteed to stay at the forefront of your mind. We'd even go as far as saying Bambi are the love children of Blue Oyster Cult, Echo and The Bunnymen and Foals. Whatever they are though, we're digging 'em.

Music News: The 1975 stream their self-titled debut album in its entirety on Soundcloud

Just when we thought we couldn't be any more into The 1975, they go and do something completely brilliant like, oh, I don't know... Stick their whole highly awaited debut album up on the internet for free streaming!

The 1975 also had a little something to say about what the album stands for:
"This album is the soundtrack to our formative years. The culmination of our adolescence and the cornerstone of our material thus far. That's exactly what it is. I held the album in my hands for the first time yesterday. To physically hold something that you have emotionally and creatively invested so much in is a very rewarding and humbling feeling - but it's also twinned with a level of uncertainty and fear of exposure. I dunno exactly how I feel about releasing this album, the fact that it's such a personal statement and creation hinders me from having an objective opinion. All I know is that it's an uncompromising and honest depiction of who we are and what we're about  and I'm very proud that we've had the opportunity to make an album like that."

Nothing like a bit of unabashed honesty to make you smile eh?  Catch the free stream at the bottom of the page!

Video: Flyte - 'Over and Out'

Flyte || Facebook || Twitter || Soundcloud

Fancy a slice of alternative indie pop in the purest, simplest form? Meet Hackney four-piece Flyte (Will Taylor, Nick Hill, Jon Supran ,Sam Berridge) who are effortlessly making credible, catchy guitar-pop, pretension-free and with a modesty that makes us wonder if they are aware of how good they really.

Set to release their 3-track EP 'Live' in the UK on September 16th, Flyte have recently made their debut video for their current single 'Over and Out' which was shot in their bedroom using green screen, the band and an egg. Catchy, chilled out and compelling, these guys have put the fun back into guitar music with a sound that washes over you like a gentle, warm, wave coming home to the shore.

Video: Falling Off Maps - 'Honest'

'Honest' is the haunting debut single from Nottingham's Falling Off Maps; an alternative/rock five-piece consisting of Dave Wright (vocals / guitar), Dane Prewett (bass / electronics), Joe Watts (guitar), Tom Harrison (piano) and Jay Wright (drums).Their sound has been aptly described as "somewhere between Radiohead, Bon Iver, Wild Beasts and early Elbow" which means that their debut album 'A Seaside Town In Winter' due for release later this year is one we are highly anticipating.

Due for release on 12th August through Square Peg Round Hole Recordings, 'Honest' is backed by an equally arousing video which you can see below, filmed, wirtten and directed by band members Dane Prewett, and David Wright. This video is the first of three to be released by the band and ties into one storyline which plays out through the videos in reverse. This is more easily explained by Dane when he says:

“Each video can be viewed with its own storyline but the idea for each one to be open ended and evocative appealed to us massively. It gives the viewer a chance to get involved more than if it was just a straight music promo, to be able to draw their own conclusions from what they see"
"Our love of cinema and storytelling and the freedom of taking the music into other mediums is integral to what we do as band. It is evident lyrically through the album, lots of snapshots of lives and stories that have very strong imagery. It just felt right to continue with that through the videos."
With that being said, we like Falling Off Maps style, we like their focus and we love their sound; so give them a listen, we're sure you will too.

Band To Watch - Temple Songs plus new single 'Passed Caring'

Article by Stephen Wake

Manchester's Temple Songs are a 4 piece outfit who describe their music as "brilliantly crafted psychedelic pop tunes". Their official debut release, 'Passed Caring' written by front man Jolan Lewis takes it's influences from a blend of sounds including The Beatles, The Stooges mixed together with the likes of Pavement and Deerhunter.
The single and B-side (Dinosaur Alley) were recorded in the bands own studio where they predominately record to tape. Temple Songs aim to be touring before and after the release of their debut 7” single 'Passed Caring' released on July 1st which you can pre-order HERE

Single Review: Spring Offensive - 'Speak' + Live Performance Video shot by Sam King.

'Speak' is the new offering from Oxford five-piece Spring Offensive.  Self  produced and written in a remote cottage in Wales, 'Speak' is about introversion, and a quest for isolation. Lyrically, the track depicts a story where the narrator favours being emotionally shut off rather than having to embrace confrontation. Perhaps this theme of melancholy and inner turmoil is reflected and finds an outlet within the repetitive hypnotic driving loop and clattering rhythm that the song possesses.

The track comes accompanied by a live performance video shot by Sam King in a desolate and cavernous setting of one of the UK'S rare Racket Courts.  Check out the video and follow the specified link at the bottom of the page if you fancy receiving a free download of the tune.

An Interview with: Marika Hackman.

When I caught up with Marika Hackman (on behalf of our sister site The Sound of Confusion) for a quick chat at the Purcell Room in London all the way back in February, she had just completed a tour with Benjamin Francis Leftwich, was finishing up one with English record producer, engineer, mixer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Johns, due for her first headline tour, and getting ready to shoot off to SXSW. It was also coincidentally the day her mini-album ‘That Iron Taste’ was released. In light of the video release for her first track from the album, 'Bath Is Black' sitting in our inbox, we'd like to give you the chance to get to know her better, check out the video, and see if you can catch her live at any of her summer festival dates.

TSOC/TMD: For those who are yet to hear 'That Iron Taste' what can they expect from it?

MH: Um, it's sort of like… the songs are their own, stripped back, have got like a folky root. But umm it's kinda more experimental and over the top… we played around with it… we were kinda just playing in the studio coming up with different ideas and things. There's some electronicy sort of instruments on there. It's not your average sort of folk record definitely.

TSOC/TMD: 'That Iron Taste' was produced by Alt J’s Charlie Andrew and you worked with Johnny Flynn on some of the tracks. How much would you say their musical style has influenced the outcome of 'That Iron Taste'?
MH: Umm, I think you can hear the difference between the records, you can hear the ones I did with Johnny have got a more folky edge to them even though they are still a bit more abstracty. They've got that like more kind of earthy feel whereas Charlie, you can tell he's got that more kind of abstract brain, like he's much more open to playing around with things, so yeah you can tell the difference, but then the songs themselves keep it all kind of together. Well, I like to think that anyway!

TSOC/TMD: What’s your favourite song from 'That Iron Taste'?

MH: Umm, that's a tricky one! Umm, I think I really like 'Plans'. I love playing it and it’s so sort of sad. Umm, then I dunno, I kinda like go through phases of preferring different ones because obviously I hear them a lot and I heard them a lot in the process… I can get bored of them very easily… Like 'Cannibal' I'm kind of sick to death of hearing. Um so yeah maybe 'Plans' or 'Retina Television' the sort of more stripped back ones which are probably not the kind of obvious singles but the kind of more albumy tracks. I like those ones.

TSOC/TMD: Which of the four elements, (Earth, Wind, Fire and Water) can you most relate to?
MH: Oooh… well I should say… I'm an Aquarius which is an air sign but it deals with water so I could say either of those two. Fire, definitely not. Um… uh… [thinks] Probably… that's so tricky! Maybe like earth. Like, solid, kind of like country lass, you know, keep your feet on the ground. I think earth is a good thing to be. It keeps you in perspective and stuff like that. All the other ones are great but they kinda sweep you away whereas earth keeps you solid and grounded. I think that’s the most practical one [Laughs].

TSOC/TMD: What do you hope people take away from listening to your music?

MH: That they've heard something different. Different, that's like still accessible, you know like, not overly experimental but they feel like they've heard something new. I would love for people to say that.

TSOC/TMD: As a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, what instruments can you play?

MH: Um, well there's the guitar, um, drums, bass, singing obviously, bit of piano, um, bit of autoharp. Like things, I've got a mandolin as well. I just kinda, I can't really play any of them to a very high level but I can play them enough to make records with them rather than sort of live.

TSOC/TMD: Do you play by ear?

MH: Yeah, I can read music and stuff but I was so slow at it, like I gave up learning the piano because I found it too stressful… It took me ages to read the notes so I was just like there's no point in doing this!

TSOC/TMD: Have you got a favourite lyric to any of your songs?

MH: Umm, I quite like on 'Cannibal' the opening one where it's like “Have you seen my nose? I cut it off last night. Let's just hope it grows, I'd hate to look a fright" [laughs] because it's kind of slightly witty, it's dark but it's joking at the same time… it's kind of like a grim nursery rhyme fairy tale but like, yeah it's kind of almost taking the mick out of itself.

TSOC/TMD: You were one of the faces of a Burberry eyewear ad campaign last year. How did that come about?

MH: Um, that was because I went to school with Cara Delevingne who's like suddenly exploded into being the model of the moment which is great um, but yeah she um, she just showed the guys at Burberry a video I had done… an acoustic video and they happened to be casting for that campaign so it was just that age old thing of people you know putting in a good word for you and it happened.

TSOC/TMD: Would you want to do any more modelling in the future?
MH: Um, it's a very strange world and I don’t think I really fit in. Um, I mean it was kind of a good eye opening experience… I did enjoy it but um, I think I'd like to focus on the music for now. Maybe it's um… It's quite lucrative for a living but not as a passion.

TSOC/TMD: You're hosting a “dead or alive” dinner party and can invite three famous musical faces. Who is sitting at the table?
MH: Oooh… well you've got to have Kurt Cobain on there, and Dusty Springfield. I'd love to chat to Dusty, she would just be awesome. Then… let's think who would the last one be, erm dead or alive *sighs* that’s a tricky one… [laughs] I think I'd probably just choose Johnny Flynn because he’s such a nice guy! [I then asked if it was just because Johnny is Marika’s friend] [more laughter] Yeah it would be nice to have someone there I knew! Or either Charlie. Charlie or Johnny. Someone with a friendly face there to chat to these two sort of legends!
